==كمحل في الصيدلة==

هو محل شائع في ال[[صيدلة]]، وخاصة في الأشكال الصيدلانية الخارجية كـ:

لا يستعمل داخلاً لأنه سام، ولا يستعمل في [[حلالات هوائية| الحلالات الهوائية]] وال[[نشوق]]ات Aerosols.

==الخصائص الفيزيائية==

كحول الإيزوبروبانول سائل عديم ال[[لون]]، سهل ال[[تطاير]] وقابل للاشتعال. له رائحة مميزة غير منفرة، يمكن أن تكون واخزة عند شمها بجرعات كبيرة. تذكر رائحته عادة بالمستشفيات أو العيادات الطبية كونه يدخل في أغلب الأحيان في تركيب المعقمات.

بتبريد ال[[سائل]] إلى -88°س نحصل على صلب عديم اللون ([[نقطة الانصهار]]) ، في حين أن [[درجة غليان]]ه عند [[ضغط نظامي|الضغط النظامي]] تبلغ 82°س.

يمتزج إيزوبروبانول مع ال[[ماء]] بكافة النسب بشكل متجانس، ويشكل [[مزيج أزيوتروبي]] (غير قابل للفصل بال[[تبخير]]) عند درجة حرارة تبلغ 80.4°س وعندما تكون نسبة الماء فيه 12.1 %.

كما يمتزج مع الإيتانول بكافة النسب.

==التحضير==

يحضر الإيزوبروبانول [[صناعة|صناعياً]] إما من ال[[بروبيلين]] أو من ال[[أسيتون]].

وذلك بإجراء تفاعل ضم الماء ([[إماهة]]) إلى البروبيلين على مبادل أيوني [[حمض]]ي ([[حفاز]])

أما تحضيره من الأسيتون فيتم عن طريق إجراء تفاعل [[هدرجة]].

==السمية==

Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into [[acetone]] by [[alcohol dehydrogenase]]. [[Symptom]]s of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include [[flushing (physiology)|flushing]], [[headache]], [[dizziness]], [[CNS depression]], [[nausea]], [[vomiting]], [[anesthesia]], and [[coma]]. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption; therefore, well-ventilated areas and protective gloves are recommended.

Isopropyl alcohol and its metabolite, [[acetone]], act as [[central nervous system]] (CNS) [[depressant]]s. Around 15 g of isopropyl alcohol can have a toxic effect on a 70 kg human if left untreated.<ref>Calculated from TDLO listed at [http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/PR/2-propanol.html Oxford University MSDS], assuming weight of 70 kg</ref> However, it is not nearly as toxic as methanol or [[ethylene glycol]]. Isopropyl alcohol does not cause an [[anion gap acidosis]] (in which as lowered blood serum pH causes depletion of [[bicarbonate]] anion) as do [[ethanol]] and [[methanol]]. Isopropyl alcohol does; however, produce an [[Serum osmolal gap|osmolal gap]] between the calculated and measured osmolalities of serum, as do the other alcohols.
